Located in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, this shrine is formally known as Hakata Sochinju Kushida Shrine (Kushida Shrine, the Chief Guardian of Hakata). Locally affectionately called 'O-Kushida-san', it has long been deeply revered as the tutelary deity and chief guardian of Hakata. The enshrined deities are Ohatsumi-no-Ookami (Kushida-no-Ookami) in the main hall, Amaterasu-Omikami in the left hall, and Susanoo-no-Ookami (Gion-no-Ookami) in the right hall. It is said to have been founded in 757 CE (Tenpyo Houji 1) through the invitation of a kami from Kushida Shrine in Matsusaka, Ise Province. The annual 'Hakata Gion Yamakasa' festival, held from July 1 to 15, is the shrine's regular festival and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage representing Hakata. A year-round display of a Yamakasa float is exhibited within the grounds, making it the center of Hakata's festival culture and the starting point for the Hakata Dontaku and Hakata Okunchi festivals.

日本一大きいお多福面をくぐる博多の節分。
2月、楼門などに日本一大きい「お多福面」が設けられ、その口をくぐって開運招福を願う博多の節分名物。
