歴史・由来

Echizen has flourished since ancient times as a strategic point in the Hokuriku region, leading to the establishment of representative Japanese shrines and temples such as Kihi Jingu (the first Ichinomiya) and Eiheiji (the head temple of the Sodo sect founded by Dogen).

The land is also deeply connected to the history of the Sengoku period, featuring sites like Tsurugi Jinja, which has ties to the Oda clan, and Shibata Jinja, built on the site of the Kitanosho Castle, the former stronghold of Shibata Katsuie.

このコースで楽しめること

At Kihi Jingu, you are welcomed by a vermilion-painted large torii gate, counted as one of the three largest wooden torii gates in Japan. At Eiheiji, you can explore the Shichido Garan (seven halls of the temple complex) surrounded by deep cedar groves and experience the world of Zen, where many unsui (monks) still undergo rigorous training.

Because the sites are widely scattered from Tsuruga to Fukui City, traveling by car is recommended. You can trace the history and prayers of Echizen in a single day.
