A shrine course exploring Miyazaki, the setting of the "Hyuga Mythology." From Takachiho, where the heavenly grandson descended, and the mythical lands of the hiding of Amaterasu Omikami in Ama-no-Iwato, to Udo Jingu (Udo Shrine) nestled on seaside cliffs, famous shrines associated with the Kiki (Records of Ancient Matters and Chronicles of Japan) myths are scattered throughout the area.

Each of these is a representative power spot of Miyazaki, where you can offer prayers amidst majestic nature. As they are widely dispersed across the prefecture, traveling by car is highly recommended.

歴史・由来

Miyazaki is the stage for the "Hyuga Mythology" depicted in the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters) and the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan). Throughout the prefecture remain lands associated with the stories of the gods, such as Takachiho, where it is said the heavenly grandson Ninigi-no-Mikoto descended; Ama-no-Iwato, where Amaterasu Omikami hid in a cave; and the Nichinan Coast, where the tale of Yakuyukihiko and Yamayukihiko is told.

It is also said to be the place where Emperor Jimmu set out on his eastern expedition, making it a land deeply connected to the foundation myths of Japan.

このコースで楽しめること

In Takachiho, you can immerse yourself in the world of mythology by visiting Takachiho Jinja (Takachiho Shrine), known for its Yokan (night kagura dance), as well as Ama-no-Iwato Jinja (Ama-no-Iwato Shrine) and Ten-an-gawa, associated with the myth of the hiding of Amaterasu. Along the Nichinan Coast, the charm lies in shrines integrated with majestic nature, such as Udo Jingu (Udo Shrine), where a vermilion-painted sanctuary sits inside a cliffside cave, and Aoshima Jinja (Aoshima Shrine), built on Aoshima island surrounded by unique rock formations known as "Oni no Sentakubata" (Ogre's Washing Board).

Since Takachiho (northern part of the prefecture) and Nichinan (southern part of the prefecture) are far apart, it is recommended to take 1 to 2 days to tour the area by car, experiencing the sites along with the natural scenery.
