Daigo Sakura (Daigo Cherry Tree)

Overview

This Edohigan cherry tree is estimated to be between 700 and 1,000 years old. It is said that Emperor Go-Daigo admired this cherry tree while on his way to exile in the Oki Islands, and this historical anecdote is the origin of its name. With a tree height of approximately 18 meters, a trunk circumference of about 9.2 meters, and branches spreading about 20 meters in all directions, it possesses an overwhelming presence for a single tree. It is considered the finest cherry tree in Okayama Prefecture. During the blooming period (mid-April), it is illuminated until 9:00 PM, and stalls are set up nearby. Standing in the Kichinen-ji village at an altitude of about 500 meters, it blooms in a breathtaking view overlooking the Okayama Basin.
