Dazaifu Tenmangu (Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine)

Overview

This sacred shrine was built atop the tomb of Sugawara no Michizane and serves as the head shrine of all Tenmangu shrines across the country, boasting over 1,100 years of history. It is widely revered as a deity of academics, culture, the arts, and the warding off of misfortune. Key sights include the 'Tobiume' (Flying Plum), which is said to have flown from Kyoto; the three Taiko-bashi (Drum Bridges) spanning the Kokoro-ji Pond, representing the past, present, and future; and the honden (main hall). Visitors from all over the country come here to pray for success in examinations.
