Enoshima Jinja (Enoshima Shrine)
えのしまじんじゃ
One of the three major Benzaiten (deities of music, wealth, and knowledge) in Japan, located on Enoshima. It is an island of matchmaking where three goddesses reside.
Overview
The enshrined deities are the Munakata San-no-Megami (Tasunzuhi-me-no-Mikoto, Ichitsushima-hi-me-no-Mikoto, and Takiri-hi-me-no-Mikoto), collectively known as Enoshima Okami. Until the Edo period, the site was worshipped as Benzaiten and is considered one of the three major Benzaiten sites in Japan, alongside Miyajima in Aki and Chiku-shima in Omi. The entire island is a sacred ground (shin-iki), consisting of the Hetsu-no-miya at the entrance, the Naka-no-miya in the center, the Oku-no-miya further in, and the Iwaya (a cave of ancient worship) at the innermost point.
