Fukuroda no Taki (Fukuroda Falls)

Overview

With a drop of 120 meters and a width of 73 meters, it is also known as the "Yotsu no Taki" (Four-fold Falls) because the water cascades down the rock face in four distinct tiers. It ranks alongside Kegon Falls and Nachi Falls as one of the "Nihon Sanmei-baku" (Three Famous Waterfalls of Japan) and won first place in the 1990 popularity vote for Japan's 100 Selected Waterfalls. It also has an alias derived from a legend where the monk Saigyo composed a poem stating that one cannot truly appreciate its beauty without visiting once in each of the four seasons. Its charm lies in its seasonal expressions: the rare full ice waterfall in winter, the fresh greenery of spring, and the vibrant autumn colors.
