Hakuto Jinja (Hakuto Shrine)

Overview

The enshrined deity (kami) is Shirousagi-shin (the White Rabbit God). This site is the stage for the "Inaba no Shirousagi" myth recorded in the Kojiki. In the myth, the deity Okuninushi-no-Mikoto saved a white rabbit whose skin had been stripped by a crocodile (shark) using a stalk of pampas grass. From this encounter, a bond was formed with Yakumo-no-hime, leading it to be regarded as the birthplace of Japan's oldest love story and medical history. Within the sacred grounds (shin-iki) are the "Omisarai-ike" (a pond where the white rabbit is said to have washed its body), Hakuto Coast with a view of Uki-no-shima Island, and the "Musubi-ishi" (binding stones) lined up for prayers for matchmaking.
