Isasumi Jinja (Isasumi Shrine)

Overview

The enshrined deity is Isasumi Okami (a collective name for Isanotoko-no-Mikoto, Isanami-no-Mikoto, Ohikomi-no-Mikoto, and Takenumikawa-be-no-Mikoto). According to the Kojiki during the reign of Emperor Sujin, the father and son—Ohikomi-no-Mikoto, who pacified the Hokuriku Road, and Takenumikawa-be-no-Mikoto, who pacified the Tokaido—reunited at this location, which is said to be the origin of the name "Aizu". As the Iwashiro Province Ichinomiya and General Guardian of Aizu, the shrine is famous for its Ayame-en (Iris Garden) from mid-June to early July and the "Otaue-sai" (Rice Planting Festival), which is one of the three major rice-planting festivals in Japan and a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
