Overview
The enshrined deities (kami) are the Munakata San-no-Megami (Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto, Tashiminohime-no-Mikoto, and Takamitsuhime-no-Mikoto). It is world-renowned for its grand torii gate standing in the sea and its vermilion-painted main hall (honden) and corridors, which appear to float on the water depending on the tide. It was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996. It is said that Taira no Kiyomori constructed the current shrine buildings, and the site has deep historical ties to the Taira clan.
