Izanagi-jingu (Izanagi Grand Shrine)

Overview

The enshrined deities are Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto. According to the Kiki (the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki), after completing the creation of the land and the birth of the gods, Izanagi-no-Mikoto settled in the 'Kakuri-no-miya' (the Hidden Palace) in the land of Taga on Awaji Island, which is the first place he created. This is said to be the site of the shrine's founding. It is the first shrine of Awaji Province and was formerly a Kanpei Taisha (an important government-sanctioned shrine). Within the sacred grounds, the 'Meoto-no-Ookususu' (Great Couple Camphor Trees), which are approximately 900 years old, stand side by side, welcoming worshippers as symbols of marital harmony and the tying of fate.
