Joren-no-Taki (Joren Falls)

Overview

A vertical waterfall with a drop of 25 meters and a width of 7 meters, it is a renowned waterfall representing Izu and has been selected as one of the 100 Famous Waterfalls of Japan. The water flows over basalt lava flows from the Hachikuboyama Scoria Hill eruption approximately 17,000 years ago, revealing beautiful columnar jointing on the rock face. The waterfall basin is 15 meters deep. Along the stream, wasabi fields spread out, and there is a habitat for the Haikomochi-shida (a fern species native only to Izu and Kumamoto). The waterfall also appears in the lyrics of the enka song 'Amagi-goe' by Sayuri Ishikawa, and a song monument stands beside the falls.
