A vermilion torii gate (shrine gate) standing on a reef in the sea. A sacred site of breathtaking scenery where it is said that the deity Ōmikimi descended.
Overview
A vermilion-painted torii gate standing on a rocky reef facing the Pacific Ocean within the grounds of Oarai Isosaki Jinja (Oarai Isosaki Grand Shrine). According to the 'Nihon Buntoku Tennō Jitsuroku', this is the birthplace of the shrine where the deities Ōmikimi and Sukunahikona descended upon this reef in 856 CE (Saiko 3). It is nationally famous as a spot to view the first sunrise of the year, and the sight of the torii gate standing amidst the waves crashing against the reef captivates many worshippers and photographers throughout the four seasons. The main hall (honden) was reconstructed during the Edo period by Tokugawa Mitsutada and is currently designated as a Betsuhyo Jinja (subordinate shrine).
