Kamou no Kusu (The Great Tree of Kamou)

Overview

Standing within the grounds of Kamou Hachiman Shrine, this tree is designated as a Special Natural Monument of Japan (designated in 1952). At a height of 1.3 meters above the ground, the trunk circumference is 24.2 meters, the root spread is 33.5 meters, and the tree height is approximately 30 meters. In 1988, it was certified as the 'Largest Giant Tree in Japan' during the Environment Agency's National Giant Tree Survey. Its age is estimated to be about 1,500 years. There is a hollow inside the trunk of approximately 13 square meters, and it is revered as a sacred site (shin-iki) in its own right.
