Rikuchu Ichinomiya Komagata Jinja (Komagata Shrine)
りくちゅういちのみや こまがたじんじゃ
The first of the eight shrines of the Rikuchu Province. This ancient shrine is said to have been founded during the era of Emperor Yuryaku and serves as the center of mountain worship for Mount Komagatake.
Overview
An ancient shrine said to have been founded during the era of Emperor Yuryaku (late 5th century), it holds the status of Rikuchu Ichinomiya (the first shrine of the Rikuchu Province). Its name remains in the Engishiki Shinmecho (a 920 CE (Engi 3) registry of shrine names). It has received deep devotion from historical figures such as Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and Yoriy<audio|>, and the four generations of the Oshu Fujiwara clan. The enshrined deities (kami) are collectively referred to as Komagata Daijin, comprising the six deities recorded on the munefuda (roof plaque) of the Okumiya (inner shrine): Amaterasu Omikami, Tenjo-tachitsukushi-no-mikoto, Kunisazuchi-no-mikoto, Wakatsu-no-mikoto, Okese-no-mikoto, and Hikonibi-no-mikoto. The honden (main hall) is located within Mizusawa Park, while the Okumiya is situated at the summit of Mount Komagatake in the Yakeishi Renpo mountain range.
