Kozushima Tenjo-san (Mount Tenjo)

Overview

A sacred mountain (reizan) standing 571.8 meters high in the center of Kozushima. The island's name, Kozushima, is a linguistic evolution of "Kamitsudeshima" (the island where gods gather). It is a holy site associated with the "Mizuhakuri Myth" (Water Distribution Myth), which tells of the deities of the Izu Islands gathering at this summit to divide the waters among the islands. The summit features a unique landscape of white gravel known as the Omote-sabaku (Front Desert) and Ura-sabaku (Back Desert), offering breathtaking views of Izu Oshima, Toshima, Niijima, Shikinejima, Miyakejima, and Mikurajima. It has been selected as one of the New Tokyo 100 Views. The hiking trails are well-maintained and are popular as a hiking course.
