Tazawa-ko (Lake Tazawa)

Overview

With a maximum depth of 423.4 meters, it is the deepest lake in Japan (ranked 17th in the world). This is the land of the 'Tatsuko-hime Legend,' who is said to have transformed into a dragon to maintain her beauty and youth. On the lakeshore stands the golden 'Tatsuko Statue' by boatbuilder Yasufumi Funukoshi, serving as a symbol of the lake. The Gozaishi-jinja (Gozaishi Shrine) on the north shore is said to be the spot where Tatsuko drank water and is a shrine dedicated to Ryujin (dragon deity) worship. Nearby, Kansha-no-miya (Ukiki-jinja) is also popular as a shrine for matchmaking (en-musubi). The cobalt blue lake surface and the surrounding mountain scenery offer breathtaking views.
