Meiji Jingu (Meiji Grand Shrine)

Overview

Founded in 1920 CE (Taisho 9). The enshrined deities (kami) are the 122nd Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. The vast grounds of approximately 700,000 square meters constitute the "Eternal Forest," which was artificially created using about 100,000 trees donated from all over the country at the time of its founding. It is known for having the highest number of visitors for the first shrine visit (Hatsumode) in Japan. Within the shrine garden lies the Kiyomasa-no-Ido (Well of Kiyomasa), and a pair of Meoto-kusu (married camphors) stands in front of the main hall (honden).
