Meoto Iwa (Futami Okitama Taisha)

Two rocks bound together by a large Shimenawa (sacred rice-straw rope) over the sea. They are symbols of marital harmony and the tying of fate.
Overview
Meoto Iwa serves as a torii gate (shrine gate) to offer distant worship to the Okitama deity's sacred stone beneath the sea. The Male Rock (approximately 9 meters high) and the Female Rock (approximately 4 meters high), bound by a large Shimenawa, are considered symbols of marital bliss and good fortune. Around the summer solstice, the morning sun rises between the two rocks (with a view of Mount Fuji on clear days). Historically, this site has been a place for Misogi (ritual purification) before visiting the Ise Grand Shrine, and it remains a custom to stop here before visiting the Naiku (Inner Shrine).
