Daisen (Mount Daisen)

Overview

An independent peak reaching 1,729 meters, it is the highest point in the Chugoku region. Known as a representative local Fuji, it is often referred to as 'Hoki Fuji' or 'Izumo Fuji' due to its balanced silhouette and the vast foothills that stretch toward the Sea of Japan. It has been an object of mountain worship since ancient times, flourishing as a major site of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism centered around Daisen-ji Temple and Omiyamasan Shrine since the Heian period. It is selected as one of the Japan 100 Famous Mountains and Japan 100 Famous Scenic Views. In winter, the snow is deep, and mountaineering requires specialized equipment, earning it the nickname 'The Tanigawadake of the East, the Daisen of the West.'
