At an altitude of 1,984 meters, it serves as the main peak of the Dewa Sanzan along with Yudono-san and Haguro-san. Gassan Jinja (Gassan Shrine) sits at the summit, enshrining the deity Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto. The pilgrimage of the three mountains—Haguro-san (representing the present), Gassan (representing the past), and Yudono-san (representing the future)—is known as the 'Journey of Rebirth.' It has been a sacred site for Shugendo for over 1,400 years since it was first opened by Prince Hachiko. It is also designated as a Japanese Heritage cultural property.
