Standing at an altitude of 1,904 meters, this is the mountain of the legend of Ama-no-Iwato, which was thrown away during the myth of the Hidden Rock.
Overview
The main peak of the Togakushi mountain range at 1,904 meters. Its name originates from the legend that when Amaterasu Omikami hid in the Ama-no-Iwato (Heavenly Rock Cave), the deity Ame-no-Tachihikome threw the rock away, and it fell here to become a mountain. This sacred mountain of Togakushi faith houses the five shrines of Togakushi Jinja (Oku-sha, Kuzuryu-sha, Naka-sha, Hokko-sha, and Hino-miko-sha) on its mid-slopes. It has flourished since ancient times as a dojo for Shugendo (ascetic mountain worship), and the hiking trails feature treacherous sections of sheer cliffs and precipices, including the 'Ari-no-Towatari' (Ant's Tower Crossing), a rocky ridge approximately 50 cm wide. Hiking is intended for advanced climbers.
