Nabegataki (Nabegataki Falls)

Overview

A representative example of 'Urami no Taki' (hidden waterfall), featuring a drop of approximately 12 meters and a width of about 20 meters, where a curtain of water spreads gracefully. The current shape was formed by the erosion of tuff layers—solidified pyroclastic flows from a massive eruption of Mount Aso approximately 90,000 years ago. There is a spacious area behind the waterfall, making it a mystical spot where you can view the outside scenery through the falling water. It became instantly famous as a filming location for a Nama-cha commercial (starring Nanako Matsushima) and attracts about 240,000 visitors annually. A prior reservation system was introduced in 2021 to promote sustainable tourism.
