Nikko Toshogu (Nikko Toshogu Shrine)

Overview

Founded in 1617, the current opulent shrine buildings were reconstructed in 1636 by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu. It was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999 as part of the "Shrines and Temples of Nikko." The grounds are packed with highlights, including the Yomeimon Gate (a National Treasure, also known as the "Gate of the Setting Sun"), the Three Wise Monkeys at the Shinkusha (the divine stables), the Sleeping Cat on the corridor, and the Okumiya, which is believed to be the burial site of Ieyasu.
