Sugi no Osugi (Great Cedar)

Overview

Located within the grounds of Yasaka Jinja (Yasaka Shrine), this tree was designated as a Special Natural Monument of Japan in 1952. It is a massive twin-trunked tree that splits into two from the base, consisting of the Minami-Osugi (root circumference approx. 20m, height approx. 60m) and the Kita-Osugi (root circumference approx. 16.5m, height approx. 57m). The Minami-Osugi is slightly larger and is referred to as the 'Largest Cedar in Japan.' Its age is estimated to be over 3,000 years. In 1947, a 9-year-old Hibari Misora visited to pray for success while recovering from a traffic accident, saying, 'Please let me become Japan's number one singer.' Because she later reached the pinnacle of the Japanese music scene, it is also known as the 'Cedar of the Goddess of Song.'
