Taga Taisha (Taga Grand Shrine)
たがたいしゃ
Affectionately known as "O-Taga-san," this shrine enshrines the two deities, Izanagi and Izanami. It is a Grand Shrine renowned for longevity and matchmaking.
Overview
The enshrined deities (kami) are the two figures, Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto. According to the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters), after these two deities created the land of Japan and many other gods, Izanagi-no-Mikoto settled in this land of Taga. Known by its popular nickname "O-Taga-san," it has been deeply revered since ancient times as a deity for longevity, matchmaking, and warding off evil. Highlights include the "Taiko Bridge," where Toyotomi Hideyoshi prayed for his mother's recovery from illness; the "Sanbon-sugi" (Three Cedars), sacred trees (goshinboku) where it is said the cedar chopsticks of Izanagi-no-Mikoto took root; and the "Jumyo-ishi" (Longevity Stone) where visitors pray for a long life. The garden of the Oku-shoin is also a notable site.
