Overview

A canyon designated as a National Scenic Spot and Natural Monument, featuring columnar jointing cliffs formed by the cooling of pyroclastic flows from Mount Aso, stretching for approximately 7 kilometers. It is famous for the scenery of the Manai Waterfall plunging from a precipice, where visitors can take a rental boat to get close to the base of the falls. The entire area is the heart of the Tenson Korin myth, with Takachiho Jinja (Takachiho Shrine), Ama-no-Iwato Jinja (Heavenly Rock Cave Grand Shrine), and Ama-no-Kanawara located nearby.
