Tosa Jinja (Tosa Shrine)

Overview

The enshrined deities (kami) are Ajisuki Takihikone-no-kami and Hitokotonushi-no-kami. This is an ancient shrine recorded in the Nihon Shoki (Records of Ancient Matters) and serves as the Tosa-no-Kuni Ichinomiya (the first shrine of Tosa Province). The main hall (honden), heiden (offering hall), and haiden (worship hall) were reconstructed by Chosokabe Motochika in the late Muromachi period. When viewed from above, they form a unique 'Iritonbo-gata' (dragonfly-wing) shape, and all are designated as Important Cultural Properties. The 'Shinko-mon' (Divine Light Gate) tower gate and the drum tower, built by Yamauchi Tadayoshi during the Edo period, are also Important Cultural Properties. The 'Shinane Matsuri' (held on August 25th of the old lunar calendar) is a famous festival.
