In 546 CE (Kei 7), a hall was built to enshrine a statue of Kannon Bosatsu that had been bestowed upon the clan of I-Ame-Wo-Hiko. It is said that in 607 CE (Suiko 14), Prince Shotoku established Kannon-ji. The temple reached its peak during the Edo period. In the Meiji era, it was separated from the Shingon-ji (a temple attached to a shrine) of Dai-Ira Shrine due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism. In 1947, it became independent from the Shingon-shu Yamaga-ha sect and founded the Kannon-shu sect.
