History
The shrine's origins date back to the Oei period, when the court noble Ueda Uemikyo enshrined Kumano Gongen (Kumano Shrine Deity). In 1587 CE (Tensho 15), the shrine was relocated to its current site. Construction of shrine buildings took place from the Edo period through the Taisho period. The structures were destroyed by an air raid in 1945 CE (Sho 20). A temporary shrine building was erected starting in 1948 CE (Sho 23), and the main hall (honden) and other structures were rebuilt between 1965 CE (Sho 40) and 1968 CE (Sho 43).
