The date of founding is unknown, but Oyamatsumi-no-Kami has been enshrined here since ancient times. In Wado 2 (709 CE), Ootori-no-Kami and Takemikazuchi-no-Kami were invited to be enshrined. Emperor Saga bestowed upon the shrine a plaque inscribed with 'Kami-go Sho-Ichi-i Ichinomiya Daimyojin' (Divine Title First Rank, First Shrine Great Deity). The shrine was destroyed during the conflicts of the Tensho period but was rebuilt by the Mori clan in Genroku 6 (1620 CE). The current shrine buildings were constructed in Hoei 2 (1705 CE).
