The shrine was founded in 809 CE during the Heian period when Ichigonomiya-no-Kami was enshrined from Katsuragi-Ichigonomiya Shrine in Nara Prefecture. It was rebuilt during the Muromachi period by Soma Danjo Toshihiro. During the Edo period, repairs were made to the main hall and the Tsuna-bi (rope fire ritual) began. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji period, the shrine merged with 13 neighboring shrines in 1909.
