Founded in 1613 by Ka-ō Shūkō as a retirement temple for the abbot of Shuri Engaku-ji. In 1683, when the temple was renamed Renka-in, the name Manso-in was transferred to his disciple, Tōhō Genjin, who built a new hermitage and named it Manso-in. The temple later relocated to Nago and moved to its current location during the Meiji era.
