During the medieval period, it was revered as a spiritual site of Shugendō (a syncretic mountain asceticism) with Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha) as its local manifestation (honganbutsu). In the early modern period, the shrine received land donations from the Satake clan, the feudal lords of Akita. In 1906 CE (Meiji 39), it was renamed Taihei-san Miyoshi Shrine.
