The current Sankoku Shrine traces its origins to the 9th year of Tenbun (1540 CE), when residents retrieved a sacred object that had floated down the Hyogo River and enshrined it at Seichiin Temple. In the 7th year of Eiroku (1564 CE), Soemon established the Sanjo Palace. The shrine was officially renamed Sankoku Shrine in the 18th year of Meiji (1885 CE). Its annual festival, the Sankoku Matsuri, is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Fukui Prefecture and is considered one of the three great festivals of the Hokuriku region.
