Amaterasu Omikami

History

The shrine was founded in 1570 CE (Genki 1) when a branch spirit of Amaterasu Omikami was invited from Ise Jingu. It was later designated as a place for prayers for enduring military fortune by the lords of the Nanbu clan. In 1629 CE (Kan'ei 6), the residences of clan retainers were donated to relocate the shrine buildings. A new main hall was constructed by order of the domain in 1764 CE (Meiwa 1), and a large mikoshi (portable shrine) was donated by Nanbu Toshisuke in 1826 CE (Bunka 9).

What visitors say

The torii gates and main hall within the grounds feature stained glass decorations, and the autumn foliage scenery is beautiful. There is a parking lot beside the approach path, but visitors should be cautious of icy slopes during winter. Two types of Goshuin (calligraphic seal stamps) are available: 'Mikonyan' and 'Catherine.' Additionally, 'Nyanko Mikujii' (cat-themed fortune slips) are offered.
