However, it is said that around the 23rd year of Enryaku (804 CE), Sakamoto Tamuramaro prayed to the deities of Takehara Sanko and rebuilt the shrine buildings as a votive offering for defeating bandits. In the 5th year of Keicho (1600 CE), the Kumano Shrine, which had been relocated to the northeast vicinity, was merged here in the 44th year of Meiji (1911 CE), and the shrine was renamed Sanko Kumano Shrine.
