In 1889 (Meiji 22), it merged with nearby Kumano Shrine, Hachiman Shrine, and Aoki Shrine, changing its name to Misasa Shrine. In 1973 (Showa 48), Tenjin Shrine was also merged. The shrine buildings were destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945 (Showa 20), but the main hall (honden) and worship hall (haiden) were subsequently rebuilt, and the deities were returned to the shrine.
