A temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect, Sankakuji is the 65th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. The temple grounds are home to mountain cherry blossoms and four-season cherry blossoms, some of which are approximately 300 years old, making the site a renowned spot for viewing cherry blossoms.

History

It is said that the temple was founded by the monk Rowan (Gyoki) in the Tenpyo era (730–749 CE) by imperial decree from Emperor Shomu. Later, Kukai visited the site, enshrined the Eleven-Faced Kannon as the principal image, and constructed a triangular fire-purification altar (goma-dan). The temple was destroyed by fire during the military campaigns of Chosokabe Motochika but was rebuilt in the second year of the Kaie era (1849 CE).

The temple grounds, located at the end of a mountain path, are meticulously maintained and exude a calm, quiet atmosphere. The grounds feature a triangular pond, large cherry trees of advanced age, and a stone monument bearing a haiku by the poet Issa.
