In 1473 CE (Bunmei 5), Takeda Nobuhiro, the founder of the Matsumae Domain, established the shrine as a guardian deity at Kachiyama Castle. It was classified as one of the three Uwanokuni shrines under direct domain control and was deeply revered by successive daimyo who visited it. The current main hall (honden) was originally built in 1699 CE (Genroku 12) and relocated from Kachiyama Castle during the Meiji period.
