This shrine enshrines Uesugi Kenshin and is one of the shrines dedicated to the founding lords (hanso) that became popular from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period. In 1876 CE (Meiji 9), the shrine buildings were relocated to the site of the former Yonezawa Castle's Inner Palace. In 1902 CE (Meiji 35), it was designated as a Special Official Shrine (betsugaku kanpeisha). In 1923 CE (Taisho 12), the current main hall (honden) and treasure hall were rebuilt based on a design by Dr. Ito Chuta.
