History

The shrine originated in 1234 CE (Bun'ryaku 1) when the local lord, Ebina Yoshimune, invited kami from Okuninomiya Shrine to serve as the tutelary deities. Formerly, rituals known as 'Hikibiki' (pulling contest) and 'Mugitsuki' (wheat pounding) were performed. Currently, 'Hikibiki' has been simplified and renamed 'Yumiza' (archery), while 'Mugitsuki' is no longer practiced.
