Ryozenji Temple
飛騨市神岡町麻生野291
A Zen Buddhist temple of the Myoshin-ji school located in Asono, Kanioka, Hida City, Gifu Prefecture. It enshrines Shaka Nyorai (the Buddha) as its principal image and is also the 23rd station of the Hida 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
History
The temple was founded in 1529 CE (Kyōroku 2) by Maiono Naomori as a protective measure for his castle, with Tōgen Shūgaku serving as the founding abbot. It was originally a Tenda school temple but later became part of the Rinzai Myoshin-ji school, becoming a sub-temple of Shūyūji in Takayama. After the temple burned down during the tenure of the 10th abbot, it was relocated to its current site and rebuilt under the 11th abbot.
