Nakanodaiji Nakanodera
羽曳野市野々上5丁目9−24
A temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect, known as the 'Middle Prince' (Nakono-daiji) and traditionally attributed to Prince Shotoku. It houses the Important Cultural Property, a gilt-bronze half-lotus seated statue of Miroku Bosatsu (Bodhisattva Maitreya), and the Nakanodera Former Temple Complex Ruins, designated as a National Historic Site.
History
According to tradition, it is one of the 48 temples founded by Prince Shotoku, with Soga no Maro credited as the founder under the Prince's command. Excavation surveys suggest the possibility of its founding around 650 CE (Hakui 1), or that it was established as a clan temple of the Funade clan from the Asuka period through the early Nara period. It fell into disrepair during the medieval period but was revived in 1661 CE (Kanbun 1). During the Edo period, it flourished as a training academy for the Ritsu sect.
