During the Jogan era, it was listed as a government shrine and elevated to the rank of Junior Third Rank. In the medieval period, it was revered as the Ichinomiya (first shrine) of Mimasaka Province. During the Sengoku (Warring States) period, it was rebuilt by Nishi Haruhisa.
