Originally known as Daishoji Temple, it was converted into a shrine and renamed during the Meiji Restoration. The shrine enjoyed strong devotion from historical figures such as Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, Fujiwara no Kiyohira, and Nanbu Toshitaka.
