History

This shrine is a branch of Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha and is also known as Hokuto Okumiya (Northeast Outer Shrine). Since the Muromachi period, there was a Yakushi-do (hall dedicated to the Medicine Buddha) on Kusushi-dake, one of the summit peaks, where mountain pilgrims had their climbing passes stamped. The Yakushi-do was destroyed during the Haibutsu Kishaku (anti-Buddhist movement), and the site was renamed Kusushi Shrine.

What visitors say

Located at the summit of Mount Fuji, visitors can enjoy the sunrise (Gorai-kou) and spectacular views. Those who reach the summit can receive a branded wooden plaque (paid) or Goshuin (a shrine's calligraphic seal stamp). Markers such as Komainu (guardian dogs) and Torii gates are installed along the climbing path to guide hikers. Please note that the opening status of the shrine office may vary depending on the season when the mountain opens on the Shizuoka Prefecture side.
