History
The founding of Kusushi Shrine dates back to 1677 CE (Enpo 5). It was formerly known as Yakushido (Medicine Buddha Hall) and was revered by villagers as their birth deity. Until the separation of Shinto and Buddhism, it enshrined Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha). Following the abolition of Shinbutsu-shugo (the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism) in the early Meiji period, it was renamed Kusushi Shrine.
