Ottori-ji Temple, Niomon Gate
胎内市乙1125
An ancient temple of the Chizan school of Shingon Buddhism located in Taiwa City, Niigata Prefecture, featuring historical structures such as the Important Cultural Property three-story pagoda and the Dai-nichi Hall.
History
It is said to have been founded in 736 CE (Tenpyo 8) by the Bodhisattva Gyo-ki and the Brahmin monk Sojo, by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu. The temple was originally called "Ottori-ji" (Ottori Temple) because it enshrined the left eye of the Buddha Shakyamuni; later, the character for "treasure" was added to the name, resulting in "Ottori-ji" (Ottori Temple). During the late Muromachi period, it received donations from the Uesugi clan, and in the early Edo period, it was deeply supported by Murakami Yoshinobu.
