History

In 1219 CE (Bunji 5), Date Asamune invited the deities from Kamakura. The shrine was named Kameoka following the appearance of a sacred turtle. After several relocations, it moved to its current location in 781 CE (Ten'ō 3) and was named Kameoka Hachiman-gu. The shrine buildings were destroyed by fire in 1945 CE (Shōwa 20). The Date family's ancestral shrine buildings were relocated to the site, and new shrine buildings were completed in 1965 CE (Shōwa 40).
